be·nab in Guyana, an open-sided shelter — a woven roof where everyone comes in out of the sun and gathers around the food.
That's exactly the idea here. Benab is part of the Toronto area's great Guyanese-Chinese Hakka tradition — Chinese wok cooking that grew up in the West Indies and came north with the families who made it.
So the menu speaks both languages: fried rice and chow mein from the wok, jerk chicken and curry and pepper shrimp from the islands, and party trays sized for the functions where everybody shows up hungry.
